INSARAG is a global network of more than 80 countries and disaster response organizations under the United Nations umbrella. INSARAG deals with urban search and rescue (USAR) related issues. INSARAG aims at establishing standards for international USAR teams and methodology for international coordination in earthquake response. Members of INSARAG are both earthquake-prone and responding countries and organizations.
INSARAG was established in 1991, following initiatives of international search and rescue teams that responded to the 1988 Armenia earthquake.
SARAID is a full member of INSARAG and is dedicated to upholding the best practice standards set down by the organization.
SARAID is due to undertake a UN classification exercise (IEC) in early 2011 - where the team will be assessed by peers from around the world and will join a select group of professional teams whose sole aim is to help in the aftermath of disasters wherever and whenever they may occur.
SARAID is aiming to be classed as a Medium Team.
